Wikipedia as a driver for change

Wikimania is a tribal meeting, open to all editors and participants interested in Wikipedia, Wikimedia and open knowledge. Please contribute to the programme by submitting your proposals and ideas.

Before and after Wikimania, you can join the Around Wikimania Esino Lario programme, a series of events in Italy and Switzerland about Wikipedia and open knowledge organized by Wikimedia Italia, Wikimedia CH and Wikimania working group.

Please consider that in Northern Italy or Switzerland you might also be interested in attending:

• The Open Cultural Data Hackathon, 1–2 July 2016 in Basel, Switzerland (registration is now open).
• The conference ICOM International Council of Museums, 3–9 July 2016 in Milan.
• The International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi", from 27 June 2016 in Varenna.

Overview

The Programme of the 2016 edition of Wikimania will include various kinds of talks, discussions and activities. Beside the usual two-day pre-conference Hackathon, we will have three parallel presentation tracks throughout the three days of the conference itself: the first features User Digests, which provide an overview of a topic and a report of what's hot about it; the second two feature Critical Issues, i.e. talks meant to present a topic, related problems and possible solutions more in-depth. Two more tracks will be dedicated to Trainings and one more to Discussions, while informal Meetups will be held before and after the working sessions in the working spaces and of course in the welcoming bars of Esino Lario.

The topics of the User Digest presentations include, but are not limited to, the State of Research, Imbalance, the Wikisource, Wikivoyage, Wikidata and OSM Projects, the Verifiability of Wikipedia, GLAM Projects, Education and Contests, Licenses and Open Policies, WMF talks, Chapters and Affiliates, the Community, Tools and Extensions, Adaptability and Visibility. The Critical Issues presentations will revolve around themes like Technical, Policy, Outreach, Projects, Research and Governance. We will have Jimbo's classic opening speech and thrilling evening activities in the beautiful surroundings of the charming Lake Como.
