Abstract

Based on a panel discussion at Wikimedia Conferentie Nederlands 2015, this presentation will focus on the current state of Wiki Loves Monuments and future challenges.

The current state is maybe not as peachy as some might believe. The technical infrastructure is drifting apart, with WMDE starting to develop their own tools, while the effort of keeping bots like the ErfgoedBot and scripts running is still not coordinated in a fashion befitting of such an important event like Wiki Loves Monuments. The need of cross-chapter cooperation in this field is evident and this presentation will suggest some solutions for this problem.

Future challenges involve the passing of the torch to new/still involved chapters from those chapters where the impact of Wiki Loves Monuments does not justify the costs anymore, for example at Wikimedia Austria, where the percentage of pictures taken has reached 97%, making this project a huge success but also forcing us to move on and try new avenues. These new avenues will also be presented in this presentation, showcasing what might work and what might not work when coming up with new "Wiki Loves..." topics.

How can we mirror the success of Wiki Loves Monuments in other areas, enabling Wikipedia and it's sister projects to profit from a new influx of editors? After all, this is probably the most important aspect of this event.

The time slot should also include time to discuss the issues raised in the presentation. Prior to Wikimania, there will be invitations sent to the chapters, making sure that the issue is taken notice of and also taken seriously.

Attendees will be encouraged/expected to share their answers/suggestions to the questions raised during the presentation on this Etherpad: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wlm-future
