Presenter: Saskia Jasmin Ehlers
Biography of Presenter: 26 years old. Industrial Engineer (TU Berlin). Currently working in a scholarship program between the European Union and the Middle East. I've been contributing to (mostly the German) Wikipedia since 2013. I have contributed to several projects focused on women in Wikipedia. In connection with those I've held several workshops on how to edit Wikipedia and the gender gap in wp at congresses or events.
Overview of topic:
"Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge"
-> Are there barriers that prevent viable knowledge from being published and how many people do really have access to Wikipedia?
During this presentation different aspects of Imbalances within the Wikipedia community will be explored. These imbalances include disparities concerning: Gender, age, race, social status, educational background and geographical distribution to name a few. I will try to focus both on imbalances in contribution but also imbalances in access to the information. Further more imbalance on how content is presented is a very important and difficult topic that I will focus on.
Another concern is the imbalance between the project being run by volunteer contributions but those volunteers not having enough power in the decision making in terms of how the budget, that is generated by their contributions, is spend. This is a power imbalance between the foundation and the Wikipedia community.
