Background
Wikipedia is not just an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, it’s also a complex living thing of people interested in sharing knowledge. Bringing people online together is one idea to engage people in a long term. Around the world, of course different approaches are needed to reach out to local Wikipedians, several of these have already been tested. Here for the first time, we bring together good practices from different places and invite people to share their experiences.
Content of the workshop
After a short introduction of participants, the recent study on local spaces, jointly created by local organizers and Wikimedia Deutschland staff, will be summarized. Afterwards, volunteer organizers from different German local spaces will present their activities and experiences. Further, we invite participants from around the world to share their experiences with periodic activities in their local areas. Having gotten a broader view on different approaches how to engage Wikipedians offline too, discussions on whether or not such activities should be more widely pursued and supported can follow.
